It was a great pity that Yukimasa Yoshida, like so many gifted artists,
passed away before he had made a name. He was able to manage
only two exhibitions in his lifetime, both of them were rather small, when
compared to his talent. Recent IT innovations have enabled his work to be
gracefully exhibited on-line to anyone who is interested. Those who visit and see his work here will
know what an exquisite painter he was.
Yoshida did not finish very many paintings, for his productive
days were tragically short, but those works he did complete are so unique,
beautiful and extraordinary. Not only did he have a remarkable technique,
he had a deep knowledge of Japanese history, especially about the Samurai. For armours and armatures, ancient costumes, and katana or Japanese swards,
he was a devoted researcher and expert. He poured all his knowledge and
sympathy for the Samurai into his paintings.
He often chose to paint the losers not the winners in history, because
his eyes were always attuned to them, and his soul were close to those who
silently walked out of the main stage of history. |

The other and totally
different side of his personality as an excessive cat lover is also at work in
his paintings. He made some portraits of his beloved cats just for pleasure, some of which
you can see here. |
